Biographical Sketch

Martin L. Smith, S.T.D., has been employed full-time as a clinical ethicist since 1987. He received his doctoral degree in theology from the Gregorian University in Rome, Italy, in 1980.

He was a Staff Bioethicist at the Cleveland Clinic for thirteen years (1987-2000). In February, 2001, he joined The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center as Chief of Clinical Ethics and as an Associate Professor in the Department of Critical Care. In June 2006, he returned to Cleveland Clinic as the Director of Clinical Ethics in the Department of Bioethics.

From 1995 to 2000, he served as President of the Bioethics Network of Ohio (BENO). His published writings include titles and topics on euthanasia, the medical futility debate, forgoing artificial nutrition and hydration, blood transfusions and Jehovah’s Witness patients, institutional ethics committees, informed consent, medical mistakes, and pastoral care and bioethics.

He is a native of Northeastern Ohio.
