Biographical Sketch

Irving Franco, MD, is an interventional cardiologist in the Cleveland Clinic Department of Interventional Cardiology. In his work as an interventional cardiologist, Dr. Franco’s specialty interests include diagnostic cardiac catheterization, angiography, coronary angioplasty, acute coronary interventions, coronary atherectomy, rotational coronary stenting and laser therapy.

A native of the Dominican Republic and a naturalized U.S. citizen, Dr. Franco received his medical degree from Santo Domingo University. He completed his internship at St. Alexis Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio and his residency at Cleveland Veterans Administration Hospital. Following his clinical training, Dr. Franco received fellowships in clinical cardiology and invasive cardiology from The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. He was appointed to the Cleveland Clinic in 1971.

Dr. Franco’s research has focused primarily on the safe and effective treatment of coronary artery disease, including studies of expandable stents, saphenous vein grafts and guided radio frequency energy ablation. He has published his research findings and his clinical experience in articles and abstracts in leading publications. Most recently, he co-authored an article on peripheral vascular disease, bare metal stenting, and long-term outcomes following coronary stenting.

He is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Heart Association (Northeast Ohio Affiliate), and the Ohio State Medical Association.
