Biography

About Andra Duncan, MD

Andra Ibrahim Duncan, MD, is a staff anesthesiologist in the Department of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Cleveland Clinic. She is board-certified in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Duncan specializes in cardiothoracic anesthesiology and critical care.

A native of Minnesota, Dr. Duncan received her medical degree from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine. While a student, she received the Lange Medical Student Award. She did her clinical training with an internship in internal medicine at University Hospital in Boston followed by a residency in anesthesiology at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. She completed fellowships in Critical Care Medicine from Massachusetts General Hospital and in cardiac anesthesia from Children’s Hospital in Boston. Her undergraduate work was in music at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota. She was a Visiting Scholar in music at Mozarteum in Salzburg.

Prior to her appointment to Cleveland Clinic in 2001 as a staff anesthesiologist, Dr. Duncan was appointed as an assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at Boston University School of Medicine and served as an attending anesthesiologist at Boston University Medical Center and as the Director of the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit. Dr. Duncan also served as Attending Anesthesiologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Washington Medical Center in Washington.

Dr. Duncan is the recipient of the John J. Downes Research Award. Her peer-reviewed research efforts have focused on the influence of gender, oral hypoglycemic agents, and left ventricular remodeling on outcomes following cardiac surgery. Dr. Duncan is currently the principal investigator of a large study investigating the benefits of glucose control in cardiac surgical patients.

She has published articles and abstracts on her specialty interests, research findings and clinical experience in leading peer-reviewed medical journals including the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and Anesthesiology, to name a few. She is the co-author of a chapter on “Volatile, Local and Intravenous Anesthetics” in a medical textbook and is the sole author of a chapter on the long-term follow-up of pediatric cardiac patients requiring mechanical circulatory support.

Dr. Duncan is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, the International Anesthesia Research Society, the 
American Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists, and the Massachusetts Medical Society.
