Laura Hoeksema, MD, MPH is the Medical Director for Cleveland Clinic Hospice and a staff physician in the Department of Palliative and Supportive Care with a joint appointment in the Center for Bioethics. She specializes in caring for individuals near the end of life, where she works alongside members of the interdisciplinary team of nurses, social workers and chaplains to provide comprehensive care to patients and support to their loved ones. Her mission is to attend to suffering at the end of life for patients and their families. She is leading the interdisciplinary team that created Emerge Stronger, a peer support program for all Cleveland Clinic caregivers impacted by unanticipated and adverse clinical events.
Dr. Hoeksema graduated from Albany Medical College and completed her residency in Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine at Griffin Hospital in Derby, Connecticut. She completed fellowship training in Patient Safety at the VA National Center for Patient Safety and Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Henry Ford Hospital and earned a Masters in Bioethics from Trinity Graduate School and a Masters in Public Health from the Yale School of Public Health. She is board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine and is a certified grief counselor.
