Preconception and Prenatal Genetics
The Center for Personalized Genetic Healthcare (CPGH) offers comprehensive preconception and prenatal genetic services to individuals who are at high risk of having a baby with a birth defect or genetic disorder. Although most babies are born healthy, between 3 to 5 percent of babies are born with some type of birth defect or learning problem.
Preconception and prenatal genetic counseling is a service that can be incorporated into your reproductive care. CPGH offers genetic counseling and, if appropriate, genetic testing.

Collect Your Family Health History
To make the most out of your visit, you should gather family health history information prior to your appointment. It may be helpful for you to talk with your relatives about genetic or developmental conditions running in your family. Specifically, you will want to discuss the following:
- Who in the family has had physical problems since birth, birth defects, mental retardation, learning problems, infertility, inherited conditions or genetic disorders?
- Did any family members die at a young age from common medical problems?
- Who in the family had difficulties with conceiving or miscarriages?
- Had anyone in the family had genetic testing?
Genetic counseling and testing are billed as two separate services.
Many insurance companies will cover 96040, which is the CPT code for genetic counseling. However, we do ask that you check with your insurance company to verify that your plan does cover the cost. If your plan does not cover 96040, please contact us at 216.636.1768 and we can discuss the proper payment arrangements with you.
If genetic testing is indicated, your genetic counselor will discuss costs and insurance coverage during your appointment.
