About the Breast Center

Cleveland Clinic’s Comprehensive Breast Cancer Program is unique in its multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer treatment, prevention and detection. Here, you will find a full array of services, from initial screening and diagnosis to innovative breast cancer treatment and supportive counseling.

Our Approach to Breast Cancer Treatment

Cleveland Clinic’s Comprehensive Breast Cancer Program offers the highest-quality care for screening, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, including access to the latest clinical trials. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, our team tailors treatment plans to the patient’s needs, taking into account the type of cancer, the age of the individual, the degree to which the cancer has spread, and the patient’s general health and desires. Our breast cancer specialists also offer an array of resources that can help patients cope with the demands of breast cancer. Treatment and detection services are available at Cleveland Clinic's main campus in downtown Cleveland and at several regional locations.

Cleveland Clinic's Comprehensive Breast Centers at Main Campus, Beachwood Family Health Center and Fairview Hospital have been awarded a three-year full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. Fairview Hospital was the first hospital in Ohio and one of the first in the nation to receive the accreditation. Fairview is also the only hospital on Cleveland's west side to have this designation. Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. A breast center that achieves NAPBC accreditation has demonstrated a firm commitment to offer its patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease.

Breast Imaging Specialists

The staff of the breast imaging department comprises nine physicians who have dedicated their careers to breast imaging through specialized training and experience, and are committed to guiding their patients through every step of the diagnostic process. They understand that news of a questionable finding at a routine examination is highly stressful, and waiting for additional testing causes even more anxiety. Therefore, they try to schedule follow-up testing and even biopsies the same day so that patients can obtain answers as quickly as possible. They also work closely with Cleveland Clinic breast surgeons to plan the best treatment options, when warranted.

Breast Surgeons

Breast Center surgeons at Cleveland Clinic offer patients state-of-the-art surgical options combined with a team approach by working with reconstructive and plastic surgeons. Breast conservation surgery involves removing the cancerous portion of the breast and an area of normal tissue surrounding the cancer, while striving to preserve the normal appearance of the breast. The goal of surgery is to remove localized cancer (cancer that hasn’t spread to other parts of the body) by removing the tumor itself. Since various surgical techniques differ in the amount of breast tissue that is removed with the tumor, expert breast surgeons will advise and recommend that best plan of care.

Genetics Specialists

The Center for Personalized Genetic Healthcare (CPGH) provides genetic counseling to individuals with a personal and/or family history of cancer. Majority of cancers occur by chance, or are sporadic. However, some cancers are caused by an inherited gene mutation, or are hereditary. Identifying a hereditary predisposition to cancer allows individuals and families to personalize cancer screening guidelines, medical management and treatment options.

Our comprehensive method for genetic counseling involves:

  • Diagnosis of a genetic condition through review of family and medical history, examination by a clinical geneticist, and if appropriate, genetic testing
  • Education about your specific diagnosis and any associated health risks if known
  • Suggestions for future medical care to optimize your health
  • Discussion of health risks to family members
  • Recommendations regarding genetic testing for at-risk family members and coordination of testing, if desired

Cancer Rehabilitation and Therapy

Cancer rehabilitation is a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to the evaluation and treatment of patients diagnosed with various forms of cancer. Individualized therapy sessions, a variety of treatment techniques and evidence based practice are utilized in order to maximize the benefits of exercise throughout the disease process. Cancer rehabilitation can address functional issues such as weakness, soft tissue tightness, joint stiffness, fatigue and swelling or edema. Therapists are available in multiple treatment settings including: pre-operative, post-operative, acute care, home health, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation. Therapy staff work in conjunction with the medical team to design components of a survivorship care plan in order to optimize overall functional outcomes.

Oncologists
Medical Oncologists

In cancer treatment, the use of drugs or a combination of drugs may be used to help kill the cancer cells, this is called chemotherapy. A medical oncologist will work with the breast surgeons and breast radiologists to determine if certain drugs should be used in treatment. The medical oncologist may advise the use of drugs in addition to, but not in place of surgery and/or radiation therapy.

The Center’s medical oncologists use a team approach when treating breast cancer with chemotherapy, bringing patients the best chance of survival.

Radiation Oncologists

Radiation therapy is the use of high-energy X-rays or electron beams to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiation is a local treatment aimed directly at the affected breast and damages the chromosomes in the cell so that they cannot multiply.

Cleveland Clinic's radiotherapy specialists care for more patients than any other cancer center in Ohio. Cutting edge technologies, dedication to research and education and strong focus on patient care provide better outcomes and experiences for patients.

Surgical Oncologists

Breast surgery involves removing the cancerous portion of the breast and an area of normal tissue surrounding the cancer. Usually, six weeks of radiation therapy is then used to treat the remaining breast tissue. Most women who have a small, early-stage tumor are excellent candidates for this approach.

Reconstructive Surgeons

Patients recently diagnosed with breast cancer face both survival and body image and self esteem issues. Their decision about having breast reconstruction after a mastectomy or lumpectomy (also known as partial mastectomy) is intensely personal.

Cleveland Clinic Plastic Surgery offers a wealth of experience in this specialized care. They provide not only a high quality of medical care, but also the individualized attention you need to weigh your options. Cleveland Clinic Plastic Surgeons offer excellent support to patients with breast cancer and understand the process necessary in treatment and care to achieve a cure and regain self-image.
