What is Cystoscopy

(Also Called 'Cystourethroscopy')

A cystoscopy is a procedure that allows your doctor to visualize the urethra and the urinary bladder through a cystoscope, which is an instrument similar to a small telescope.

The procedure usually takes 5 to 10 minutes, and there is usually minimal discomfort. The procedure will be performed on the 10th floor of the Department of Urology. A urology nurse will take you to the procedure room and remain with you during the procedure. She or he will explain the procedure in detail and answer any questions you may have.

Prior to the procedure, lidocaine jelly (a numbing medication) will be instilled into your urethra, allowing the doctor to pass the cystoscope with less discomfort into your bladder.

Following the procedure, your nurse will review a home-going instruction sheet with you and answer any questions.

The day of your cystoscopy, you may take your medications and eat breakfast if you have no other scheduled tests.
