The Department of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine

The Section of Respiratory Therapy is dedicated to providing superb, appropriate clinical care, advancing the science and profession of respiratory care and promoting educational advancement for practitioners and their patients. The section strives to accomplish these goals while valuing the individual patient, therapists, and colleagues.

Respiratory therapists in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine play an integral role in the delivery of outstanding patient care. The Section of Respiratory Therapy has 80 full-time and 30 part-time respiratory therapists. This large number is needed to provide 24-hour coverage for adult and geriatric patients hospitalized in the following areas at The Cleveland Clinic:

  • Medical Intensive Care
  • Neuro Intensive Care
  • Coronary Intensive Care
  • Heart Failure Unit
  • Ventilator weaning unit
  • Thoracic surgery floor
  • Organ transplant floor
  • Palliative care
  • Pulmonary rehab
Advanced Practice

In addition to traditional therapy, our advanced practice includes:

  • Arterial line insertion
  • Bronchoscopy assistance
  • Mechanical ventilator management and weaning
  • Nitric Oxide administration
  • Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NPPV)
  • Respiratory Therapy Consult Service (RTCS)
  • Research
