What kinds of skin care products are available?
The number of skin care products available is overwhelming. However, a good skin care regimen could provide the following:
- Effective Cleansing
- Exfoliation by removing the superficial or sun-damaged layer of the skin using an exfoliant (e.g., glycolic acid, salicylic acid or rennol).
- Daily sun protection is a must !
- Products that stimulate the deeper layers of the skin
- In addition, antioxidants such as vitamin C, peptides, growth factors or DNA repair products may be added to this regimen.
Examples of products offered at Cleveland Clinic include:
Several facial peels are available, ranging from superficial to deep. These peels can accomplish a lot - from simply rejuvenating the skin to removing photodamage as well as precancerous cells.
The newest peels added include the LHA Peel from Biomedic and Illuminize Peel by SkinMedica.
Peels are not for people with active cold sores, sunburn or excessively sensitive skin, who have used isotretinoin (Accutane) in the last year, have had chemotherapy or radiation or have certain allergies. Pregnant or nursing women should check with their physician before having any kind of peel.
Exceptional makeup products:
Two makeup lines that double as camouflage after plastic surgery and as regular day-to-day makeup are available. Both brands have sun protective factors (SPF) of 17 or higher.
- Lycogel, from LYCOScience, helps bring healthful oxygen to skin to promote healing while allowing perspiration to evaporate. Lycogel, helps reduce redness and disguise bruises and scars. It is a gel based liquid makeup.
- Iredale Mineral Makeup is an ideal cover-up for rosacea (persistent facial redness) or for someone looking for a healthier makeup. Iredale comes in pressed and loose powder forms, making it good for oily as well as dry skin. It does not rub off easily and also lets skin breathe.
Can I use the products even though my skin is hypersensitive?
Hypoallergenic skin care products are available. In consultation with our skin care specialists, patients with hypersensitive skin may be treated with products as well as peels.
How are these skin care products different?
The Department of Plastic Surgery uses only those products that have been shown scientifically to be effective. Most products contain no filler ingredients or fragrances. Many of these products can be obtained only through a physician’s office or by prescription. Our knowledgeable physicians and skin care specialists, who are highly skilled and experienced, will help you choose the best skin care program for your lifestyle.
Consultation
Our skin care specialists provide free consultations with physician supervision. They will perform a skin care analysis and tailor your treatment to suit your individual needs. No matter what your skin type or color, or whether your skin is mildly or severely damaged, acne prone or hypersensitive, a special program can be designed. Our plastic surgeons work closely with the skin care specialists to provide the best quality care. If questions arise during your treatment, a plastic surgeon is readily available to assist our skin care specialists.
Are the products affordable?
Our products are all competitively priced and often less expensive and more effective than department store brands. Many factors determine which combination of skin products are appropriate for you. Consult our plastic surgeons and skin care specialists to help with your treatment plan.
