»How Much Sodium Do I Need?

Though the most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend an average person consume between 1,500 milligrams to 2,300 milligrams (mg) of sodium per day, the needs of an athlete vary widely depending on activity level. Knowing how to determine, monitor and maintain appropriate sodium levels will ensure optimal performance and better health.

Sodium is a mineral that helps regulate the body’s fluid levels, blood pressure and blood volume and aids in stimulating nerve function and muscle contraction, all vital to performance. The most common form of sodium consumed in American diets is salt, an abundant ingredient in food because of its ability to enhance flavor and preserve freshness.

Because fluid and sodium needs are unique to each athlete, a better strategy to meeting your individual needs is to create a hydration plan, monitor your plan by weighing yourself before and after training sessions or competition, and rehydrate with sodium-rich sports drinks and foods.

If you exercise at a moderate intensity for 30 minutes to 60 minutes most days, a general rule is to aim at the upper end of, but below, the tolerable upper intake level (TUIL) of the Dietary Guidelines, which is 2,300 mg per day.
