Working on Improving Patients’ Healthcare Experience and Protecting the Environment

“Patients First” is, and always will be, Cleveland Clinic’s mission. But putting patients first is more than just delivering high-tech clinical care. It is also addressing patients’ emotional needs. In an effort to improve on its best practices in delivering high-quality, empathetic patient care, Cleveland Clinic recently appointed Bridget Duffy, MD, to the new position of Chief Experience Officer. In addition to several other initiatives, Dr. Duffy is creating a patient advisory council to recommend ways to improve the patient experience.

Cleveland Clinic also has established an Office for a Healthy Environment to expand and oversee environmental initiatives throughout the health system. The newly appointed Director, Christina Vernon Ayers, AIA, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), will lead system wide environmental initiatives, including resource conservation, waste management, green building, environmentally preferred purchasing, and toxicity reduction. Cleveland Clinic is collaborating with other organizations, including Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E), the U.S. Green Building Council and Cleveland sustainability organizations to initiate, support, track and/or manage environmental initiatives.

CCAD is one of a number of initiatives led by Mubadala Healthcare, the division of Mubadala dedicated to investing in projects that enhance the private healthcare infrastructure of Abu Dhabi and the United Arab Emirates. The hospital will be an extension of the Cleveland Clinic model, providing specialty services designed to meet the healthcare needs of patients currently traveling abroad for treatment.

Researchers Developing Bioartificial Kidney

The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering awarded Shuvo Roy, PhD, a $3.2 million, three-year grant to develop a bioartificial kidney that can be used instead of dialysis. Dr. Roy and his team are developing an implantable, self-regulating bioartificial kidney that will filter toxins and absorb necessary salts and water like human kidneys. The team includes physicians and engineers from the Lerner Research Institute’s Department of Biomedical Engineering and Cleveland Clinic’s Department of Nephrology. With the scarcity of donor organs, the bioartificial kidney could be an invaluable alternative to kidney transplantation.

Mikati Foundation Gift Supports Research for Liver Diseases

Cleveland Clinic recently established the Mikati Endowed Chair in Liver Disease and Liver Transplantation, its first international chair, funded by a grant of $1.5 million from The Mikati Foundation. Liver Transplant Specialist Nizar Zein, MD, was honored as the first to hold the newly established Chair. Annual funding supports research activities, including those that will help identify factors leading to progressive liver disease and enhance the development of new, noninvasive tests to diagnose liver diseases and liver cancer.
