In a special program provided by the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital, student models teamed with local etiquette expert Dick Blake to show local Fashion Week spectators that manners, along with the clothing from Nicky Nicole at Eton Chagrin Boulevard, are part of the latest styles.
Young women demonstrate style and grace during Fashion Week Cleveland
In the final weekend of Fashion Week Cleveland 2009, students from Cleveland Municipal Schools showcased young women’s apparel from Nicky Nicole to spectators at the Western Reserve Historical Society. As part of the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital’s Manners & Etiquette series, the models were joined in their showcase by their mothers, as well as by Dick Blake, whose personal presentation tips pay close attention to detail.
The Fashion Week showcase was the latest in the series sponsored by Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital and featuring Dick Blake. Each program focuses on social skills, demeanor, and deportment.
Mr. Blake emphasized that it is important for everyone to show good manners and respectful behavior. With his own gentle and engaging humor, he demonstrated the importance of a smile, a compliment, and a cheerful demeanor. The children also practiced elegant and graceful ways to applaud, speak, stand, sit, and shake hands.
Robert Wyllie, MD, Chairman and Physician-in-Chief of the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital, said manners are important for children to learn when developing relationships.
“An appreciation for courtesy, civility, and manners is an important part of a healthy lifestyle because it is the foundation of a supportive environment,” said Dr. Wyllie.

Elaine Wyllie, MD, is director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Pediatric Neurology, and the wife of Dr. Robert Wyllie. She said that child development is enhanced by manners education, which is an intuitive way to emphasize courteous behavior and prevent negative social habits.
Dr. Robert Wyllie said Mr. Blake has long been a master teacher of manners and etiquette, a topic which fit well with Fashion Week Cleveland and will be on display again on Saturday, October 17, 2009 as part of Nordstrom’s Fall Fashion Show.
