New Vice-Chairman Named for Glickman Urological Institute

8/27/2008

Eric A. Klein, MD, has been named Vice-Chairman of the Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute. Dr. Klein, who has been a physician at Cleveland Clinic for 19 years, will work with Chairman Andrew C. Novick, MD, to further expand the institute’s reputation for medical and surgical advancements while fostering an environment of collaboration between and among departments. The news comes just weeks before the institute unveils its new $128 million state-of-the-art home, Glickman Tower, paving the way for the next wave of innovations from one of the country’s top urological and kidney programs.

“Dr. Klein’s leadership and collegiality has led to many individual and institutional accomplishments over the years that will serve him well in this new role, and it’s truly an honor to have him as Vice Chairman,” said Dr. Novick. “With the respect he has garnered throughout his career from colleagues around the world, Dr. Klein is well-positioned to continue building upon the history and experience of the Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute in ways that will benefit our patients, physicians and peers for decades to come.”

In addition to his role as Vice-Chairman, Dr. Klein has also been named as the Director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Research within the Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute.  This additional role compliments Dr. Klein’s national and international leadership in the biology and management of prostate cancer.

His clinical area of interest is urologic oncology, including cancers of the prostate, bladder, testis and kidney, and he is also highly regarded for his surgical finesse in reconstructive procedures. Dr. Klein and his colleague Robert Silverman of Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner Research Institute led a team of investigators in the discovery of XMRV, a novel virus linked to prostate cancer. Throughout his career, Dr. Klein has been recognized with numerous awards from organizations like the American Cancer Society, Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and Cleveland Clinic, and he has been included among the Best Doctors in America for several years.

Dr. Klein brings a wealth of both clinical and academic experience to the post. He has authored 286 scientific articles and currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed journal, Urology.  Dr. Klein is a frequent lecturer and visiting professor at numerous national and international universities, and he holds many leadership roles including President-Elect of the Society of Urologic Oncology and Prostate Organ Site Chair for the Southwest Oncology Group.

Most recently, Dr. Klein served as Head of the Section of Urologic Oncology in the Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute.  He has also previously served as a member of the Cleveland Clinic Board of Governors. Dr. Klein will continue to hold a faculty appointment as Professor of Surgery within the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Klein has been on staff at Cleveland Clinic since 1989.
