Reverend Dr. A. Charles Bowie of East Mt. Zion Baptist Church to Receive Lifetime of Service Award

Cleveland Clinic employees and community members will join in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014, at the InterContinental Hotel & Conference Center, 9801 Carnegie Ave., in Cleveland at the 22nd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. day of celebration.
The Reverend Dr. A. Charles Bowie of East Mt. Zion Baptist Church will receive the Lifetime of Service Award– Cleveland Clinic’s highest community honor. The keynote speaker will be veteran political strategist Donna Brazile, adjunct professor, author, syndicated columnist, television political commentator.
“Reverend Bowie is an important community leader and tireless advocate for the health of our community. His leadership has made East Mt. Zion Church one of the city’s most notable congregations. We honor his commitment to education, social progress, and the wellbeing of our neighborhood,” said Cleveland Clinic President & CEO Toby Cosgrove, MD
The program begins at 7 a.m. with an ecumenical prayer service in the hotel’s conference center. Bishop J. Delano Ellis, II, Pastor of the Pentecostal Church of Christ in Cleveland, will deliver the message.
The Community Breakfast will begin at 8 a.m. in the ballroom of the InterContinental. The program includes a keynote address from Brazile and the award presentation to Dr. Bowie. Dr. Bowie is a graduate of Paul Quinn College and Ashland Theological Seminary. He served as Vice President and Treasurer of the National Missionary Baptist Convention of America and is President-Emeritus of the General Missionary Baptist Association of Ohio.
Dr. Bowie has pastored East Mt. Zion Baptist Church for 37 years. His commitment to serving others has taken him on missions across the United States as well as to Ethiopia, the Virgin Islands, Australia, and the Holy Lands and to Great Britain.
Dr. Bowie is the fourth recipient of the award, which was established by Cleveland Clinic to honor and thank a serving leader who has exhibited extraordinary strength of spirit and remarkable efforts in their public service. The Reverend Dr. Otis Moss Jr. was the first recipient in 2011, followed by 2012 with The Reverend Dr. Marvin A. McMickle, and last year’s recipient Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson.
Brazile is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, a syndicated newspaper columnist for United Media, for Ms. Magazine, and an on-air contributor to CNN, NPR, and ABC, where she regularly appears on ABC’s This Week. In August 2009, O, The Oprah Magazine chose Brazile as one of its 20 “remarkable visionaries” for the magazine’s first-ever O Power List. In addition, she was named among the 100 Most Powerful Women by Washingtonian magazine, Top 50 Women in America by Essence magazine, and received the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s highest award for political achievement.
