Project Will Double Size of Current Emergency Department

July 17, 2013

Cleveland Clinic’s Lutheran Hospital is hosting a kick-off celebration on Wednesday, July 17 at 11:00 a.m. to begin construction on a new $17.5 million emergency department.

The expansion will double the size of the hospital’s current emergency department to 14,000 square feet, and offer patients improved access to emergency services with a newly designed entrance. The current 14-bed department will add seven beds for a total of 21 beds, as well as a new split-flow triage and treatment area to expedite patient care. The current emergency department will remain open for patients during construction. The project is expected to be completed in 2015.

“We are very excited to announce this expansion and investment in the Ohio City community,” said Brian Donley, MD and President of Lutheran Hospital. “Building this new state-of-the-art emergency department shows our long-term commitment to the city of Cleveland, and our dedication to expanding services that will better serve the healthcare needs of our community.”

Lutheran Hospital’s current emergency department was built in 1957 with updates in 1988 and 2005. This expansion marks a significant investment into the hospital’s infrastructure and health services. Lutheran Hospital is the only hospital on the near west side of Cleveland and the largest employer in Ohio City. Last year, the hospital treated 26,000 patients in its emergency department, an average of 5,000 over its current capacity.

Features of the new emergency department include:

  • 21 new private rooms with state-of-the-art patient monitoring equipment, including six rooms specifically designed for patients with behavioral health needs
  • A more prominent entrance providing better access to emergency services for the community
  • A new split-flow triage and treatment area to expedite patient care
  • A new built-in decontamination room for emergency preparedness
  • An additional $5.5 million will be invested in upgrades to the hospital’s infrastructure, new imaging equipment and renovation of its operating rooms

Cleveland Clinic is working with The Krill, Co., Inc., construction manager for the project, and Bostwick Design Partnership, who designed the expansion. Both companies are based in Cleveland.

The expansion is part of Cleveland Clinic’s continued commitment to meet the healthcare needs of its communities. Earlier this year, Cleveland Clinic’s Fairview Hospital opened a 155,000-square-foot addition, including a new emergency department and intensive care unit to improve access to critical care services on the west side. In recent years, Cleveland Clinic has also made significant investments in emergency services at several other facilities including Richard E. Jacobs Health Center, the Twinsburg Family Health and Surgery Center, and Hillcrest Hospital.
