Cleveland Clinic is the best hospital in the Cleveland metropolitan area, according to new rankings by U.S.News & World Report. In all, nine Cleveland Clinic Health System hospitals ranked among the 17 best hospitals in the area, including seven of the Top 10.

The following Cleveland Clinic hospitals placed among the area’s best:

“These rankings illustrate the strength of Cleveland Clinic’s value to communities throughout northeast Ohio,” said David Bronson, MD, President of Cleveland Clinic Regional Hospitals. “While all hospitals can’t be all things to all people, we are here to serve the needs of every patient in the region by building a healthcare system that places a highly specialized hospital at the center to handle the most difficult cases, with smaller centers of excellence in local communities.”

In its annual “Best Hospitals” issues, U.S.News & World Report ranks hospitals nationwide in 16 medical specialties, identifying hospitals that are exceptionally skilled in handling the most difficult cases. This is the first time the magazine has ranked hospitals on a local level. To be ranked in its metro area, a hospital had to score in the top 25 percent among its peers in at least one of 16 medical specialties, based on existing 2010-11 data.

In the Miami-Fort Lauderdale metro area, Cleveland Clinic Florida ranked No. 2 out of 18 hospitals.

Cleveland Clinic has a history of ranking highly in the magazine’s annual rankings. In U.S.News’ “2010-11 Best Hospitals,” released last July, Cleveland Clinic ranked as the fourth best hospital in America, while its heart program ranked as the best in the nation for the 16th consecutive year. In all, 14 Cleveland Clinic specialties ranked in the Top 10 nationally: Heart & Heart Surgery (1); Urology (2); Gastroenterology (2); Rheumatology (2); Pulmonology (3); Kidney Disorders (3); Gynecology (4); Orthopedics (4); Diabetes/Endocrine Disorders (6); Neurology & Neurosurgery (6); Ear, Nose & Throat (8); Cancer (9); Geriatrics (10); and Ophthalmology (10).

Lutheran Hospital also ranked among “2010-11 Best Hospitals,” ranking 42nd in neurology and neurosurgery. Fairview Hospital (respiratory care, 33) and Hillcrest Hospital (digestive disorders, 41, and respiratory care, 41) were ranked in the “2009-10 Best Hospital” rankings.

Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital earned national rankings in eight pediatric specialties – Cancer, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Heart & Heart Surgery, Kidney Disorders, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Urology – more than any other children’s hospital in the Cleveland area.
