Cleveland Clinic Research Grants for Oct 2008

Grants fund laboratory-based, translational and clinical research to understand the causes of human diseases and develop new treatments and cures

Four Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute researchers recently received grants totaling more than $2.3 million:

  • Charis Eng, MD, PhD, Chair, Genomic Medicine Institute, was awarded a total of $250,000 over 1 year for “Differential Biallelic Expression of PTEN in Patients with Heterozygous Germline (new) and Genes that Affect Mitochondrial Function as Novel Mediators of Breast Cancer Susceptibility (continuing).” Funded by the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

  • James Finke, PhD, Immunology, was awarded $240,598 over 2 years for “Defining the Mechanisms by which Sunitinib Regulates T-regulatory and Myeloid Derived Suppressor Cells in Renal Cell Carcinoma Patients Resulting in Improved T cell Immunity.” Funded by Pfizer, Inc.

  • Neetu Gupta, PhD, Immunology, was awarded $115,875 over 1 year for “A Systems Biology Approach to Evaluate Ezrin as a Therapeutic Target in Breast Cancer." Funded by the U.S. Department of Defense.”

  • Steven Lietman, MD, Biomedical Engineering, was awarded $1,713,265 over 5 years for “Molecular Mechanisms in Bone Resorption (R01).” Funded by the National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research/NIH.
