Cleveland Clinic announced today the appointment of Daniel Martin, M.D., a distinguished ophthalmologist and leading researcher in major causes of age-related vision loss, as Chairman of Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute. Dr. Martin assumed the post this week.
Dr. Martin comes to Cleveland Clinic from Emory University in Atlanta where he held an endowed professorship and was director of retina service.
Dr. Martin will lead a comprehensive eye institute that sees 150,000 patients each year, offering services in ophthalmology, optometry, and medical and surgical treatment of eye diseases, in addition to significant research activity.
“Over the past 15 years, Dr. Martin has established deep expertise in the treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and has become the foremost authority on the design and execution of clinical research in this area,” said Joseph Hahn, M,D., Cleveland Clinic Chief of Staff. “His reputation, talent and energy will bring continued growth and ideas to Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute and set the stage for new advanced research and continued clinical excellence.”
Dr. Martin is currently chairman of a 45-site, 1,200-patient clinical trial comparing the effectiveness of two leading drugs used in treatment of AMD. The study, the Comparison of Age-Related Macular Degeneration Treatments Trials (CATT), is due to be complete in 2011 and is funded by the National Eye Institute.
He has served as the study chairman for six other multi-center randomized trials including studies that led to FDA approval of the drug and implantable drug delivery system that is the standard of care for treating sight-threatening eye infection in AIDS patients.
Dr. Martin has also served as principal investigator for more than 25 clinical trials and has significant experience serving on clinical trial steering committees, as well as data and safety monitoring boards.
“Cole Eye Institute has a highly-acclaimed clinical and research staff that I am very pleased to have the opportunity to lead,” said Dr. Martin. “My family is looking forward to becoming enthusiastic members of the Cleveland community.”
Dr. Martin has published more than 80 peer-reviewed articles and delivered more than 170 lectures by invitation. He has received numerous awards including the 2004 Rosenthal Award from the Macula Society for outstanding contributions to the field, a 2007 Honor Award from the American Society of Retina Specialists and a 2007 Senior Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Martin is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Emory University School of Medicine where he was chief resident.
