Generosity of Sydell L. Miller and the Miller Family Will Change the Landscape of the Clinic and the Future of Cardiac Care

09/22/2005

A $70 million gift from Sydell L. Miller and her daughters, Lauren Spilman and Stacie Halpern, was announced today by Delos M. “Toby” Cosgrove, M.D., CEO and President of The Cleveland Clinic.

The gift from the co-founder of Solon-based Matrix Essentials, Inc. and her family, will name the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Pavilion, the Clinic’s new main entrance and the cornerstone of future expansion. This is one of the largest gifts made in the philanthropic history of the United States. The Pavilion will house the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic Heart Center.

“Mrs. Miller and her family have touched numerous organizations with their generosity and today their philanthropic leadership helps us inaugurate a new era at The Cleveland Clinic,” Dr. Cosgrove said. “This gift, combined with those of more than 30,000 friends and donors who have supported the Clinic’s cardiac care program and current building initiative, will change the face of Cleveland Clinic, projecting our commitment to patient care, research and education across all specialties.”

This expansive 970,000 square-foot pavilion, slated for completion in spring 2008, will consist of a large outpatient facility, a hospital tower and a state-of-the-art technology building. The project will comprise the most advanced practices and technologies in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease and will serve as the new gateway to the Clinic’s health and wellness programs. In addition to the Clinic’s Heart Center, the grand edifice will house other institutes and programs including radiology and imaging.

The Clinic’s new main entrance and gateway will be facing Euclid Avenue. The structure will contain exam rooms, physician offices, labs and other clinical facilities supporting cardiovascular medicine and thoracic and cardiovascular surgery. The pavilion will also include a winter-garden atrium, restaurants, gallery space, gift shops, a pharmacy and a patient resource center.

The new pavilion will provide a much needed avenue for growth to accommodate the Clinic’s extensive medical resources and growing patient demand. The portion of the project dedicated to the Clinic’s cardiac program alone will include 128 exam rooms, 79 procedure rooms and 155 physician offices in addition to 16 operating rooms, 12 catheterization labs, 12 nuclear medicine rooms, 294 private inpatient rooms (four of which will be V.I.P. rooms) and 110 intensive care beds. A fully-equipped conference center with telemedicine, satellite video and digital imaging capabilities is also planned.

“My family and I are deeply grateful for the care we have received at The Cleveland Clinic and recognize this institution for its excellence in health care,” said Mrs. Miller. “It is important for our family to honor the memory of Arnold M. Miller as a true entrepreneur. We feel that this gift will continue the entrepreneurial spirit of The Cleveland Clinic with its innovation and leadership in healthcare. This growth will also help benefit the city of Cleveland”.

“I’ve known Mrs. Miller and the Miller family for many years and I am not surprised by their generosity,” said Mehdi Razavi, M.D., a cardiologist at The Cleveland Clinic and Mrs. Miller’s physician. “Mrs. Miller is a great friend of the Clinic who is truly committed to making a difference in the lives of others. Her gift will have a great impact on the health of countless patients and their families.”

Arnold and Sydell Miller co-founded Matrix Essentials, Inc., in 1980 and grew the company into the largest manufacturer of professional hair and beauty products. After Mr. Miller’s death in 1992, Mrs. Miller more than doubled the company’s sales before selling the business to Bristol-Myers Squibb in 1994. She remained chairman of the board until she retired in 1996. Today, Matrix is part of L’Oreal USA’s Professional Products Division.
