Neurology & Neurosurgery Program 4th in Nation and Best in Ohio

Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital ranked higher in more specialties than any other children’s hospital in northeast Ohio in U.S. News & World Report’s 2009 edition of America’s Best Children’s Hospitals. The children’s hospital’s Neurology & Neurosurgery ranked 4th nationally.

Overall, Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital earned national rankings in eight out of 10 specialties, including:

  • Neurology and Neurosurgery: 4th (Best in Ohio)
  • Orthopedics: 12th (Best in northeast Ohio)
  • Urology: 15th (Best in northeast Ohio)
  • Kidney Disorders: 16th (Best in northeast Ohio)
  • Digestive Disorders: 19th (Best in northeast Ohio)
  • Heart & Heart Surgery: 22nd (Best in northeast Ohio)
  • Diabetes & Endocrine Disorders: 18th
  • Respiratory Disorders: 23rd

“These rankings demonstrate the commitment we’ve made to enhance the care of families and children at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital,” said Robert Wyllie, M.D., Physician-In-Chief and Chairman of the Cleveland Clinic Pediatric Institute & Children’s Hospital. “We are pleased with our progress as these rankings illustrate our expertise in caring for complex conditions and our ability to accommodate the needs of families who entrust us with the care of their children.”

Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital grew considerably in recent years, expanding the number of patients, medical staff, and facilities.

Last year, Children’s Hospital physicians recorded more than 500,000 patient visits at Main Campus and Shaker Campus locations, as well as Cleveland Clinic Family Health Centers.

In the past three years, 78 additional physicians have joined the hospital staff, including national experts in congenital heart disease, pediatric lung disease and neonatology.

“What makes Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital unique is we stress the importance of medical integration across the hospital system and throughout our specialties, to ensure our patients receive the right care to meet their individual needs,” Wyllie said.

Recent facility expansions have included the state-of-the-art Lerner Autism School and Cleveland Clinic Center for Autism, a larger Pediatric Radiology Suite with a new children's MRI-Anesthesia Center. Expansions planned for 2009 include a 30 percent increase in hospital beds, a new children’s cancer unit, an expanded 25-bed Pediatric ICU and a new special delivery unit next to the neonatal ICU.

U.S. News based this year’s rankings on reputation, outcome, and care-related measures such as nursing care, advanced technology, credentialing, and other factors. Complete rankings are published online at www.usnews.com/childrenshospitals and will be featured in the magazine’s August issue, on newsstands July 21.
