Medina General Hospital Becomes Ninth Community Hospital in
Cleveland Clinic Health System

Today, Medina General Hospital officially became part of the Cleveland Clinic health system, which includes eight other community hospitals in Northeast Ohio.
“We’re excited to have Medina Hospital join our network of hospitals throughout Northeast Ohio,” said Fred DeGrandis, President and Chief Executive Officer, Cleveland Clinic Community Hospitals. “We look forward to building on Medina Hospital’s heritage and combining that with the advancements, research and clinical excellence Cleveland Clinic will bring to this community.”
As part of the affiliation, Medina General Hospital will change its name to Medina Hospital, as other hospitals joining Cleveland Clinic have historically done.
Other plans moving forward as a result of Medina Hospital joining Cleveland Clinic, include enhancing access patients will have for needed specialty services; expanding Cleveland Clinic’s services throughout Medina County; and improving the quality and efficiency of services to those coming to Medina Hospital.
“This affiliation is a pivotal step to ensuring we continue to uphold what we value most – taking care of our patients,” said Rob Stall, President, Medina Hospital. “Our plan moving forward is to update and upgrade services to provide the highest quality, cost-effective healthcare, while also improving transparency and maximizing the experience for our patients.”
In addition to enhancing Medina Hospital’s clinical services, there will also be a focus on improving the experience patients and visitors will have when they come to Medina Hospital. Immediately, visitors will notice one change when they enter Medina Hospital – greeters wearing red coats. Known simply as “redcoats,” these greeters are a fixture at Cleveland Clinic’s main campus whose purpose is to welcome and offer assistance and guidance for patients and visitors.
Other enhancements planned to improve the patient’s experience include implementing electronic medical records, which are a signature of Cleveland Clinic. This will allow Medina Hospital patients to use MyChart to manage prescriptions, appointments and keep track of their medical history online. Patients also will have access to Healing Services programs, including massage, guided imagery and spiritual counseling.
Additional new offerings coming to Medina Hospital include Patient and Family Councils, a best practice in use at other Cleveland Clinic hospitals, which allows hospital officials to stay closely connected with patients and their families and get valuable insight to improve how care is provided. A Community Advisory Board consisting of local resident and business leaders will also be added to better align the needs of the community with the services of the hospital. Services have also been added to make it easier for community physicians to use Medina Hospital and work closely with Cleveland Clinic specialists.
As part of the agreement, Cleveland Clinic will have representatives on the Medina Hospital Board, including

- Steven Glass, Chief Financial Officer, Cleveland Clinic;
- Daniel Martin, MD, Chair, Cole Eye Institute;
- Timothy Spiro, MD, Chair, Regional Oncology, Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute;
- Jules Moodley, MD, Chair, Perinatology, Fairview Hospital;
- Josh Miller, MD, Director, Strongsville Family Health Center.
In addition, Medina Hospital President Rob Stall will serve on the Medina Hospital Board.

In celebration of the affiliation, Medina Hospital is hosting a community event on Sunday, Sept. 27 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the hospital grounds. There will be free entertainment, games, treats and fun prizes for all who attend.
The affiliation is the result of due diligence discussions between Cleveland Clinic and Medina General Hospital that began in July 2008.
Cleveland Clinic and Medina Hospital will commit to capital investments totaling $40 million to support a multi-year strategic plan to strengthen the hospital. Cleveland Clinic will also make a $10 million donation to the Medina Hospital Foundation, which will be utilized over time to support programs and services at the hospital.
