International Physician Observers are foreign physicians selected to visit a designated medical department.
The program exposes participants to the latest practices within a specialty area through clinical interactions, operating room observations, and teaching conferences.
Due to high volume of Cleveland Clinic rotating residents and fellows, the following areas are unable to accept applications for observerships:
- Clinical Gynecology
- Emergency Medicine
- General Pediatrics
- Hospital Medicine
- Internal/Family Medicine
- Neurology/Neurosurgery
- Obstetrics
- Ophthalmology
- Pediatric Gastroenterology
- Rheumatology
Applications for the following clinical areas will be received, however due to space limitations will not be processed for placement until 2010 or date identified below:
- Dermatology
- Gastroenterology
- Hematology/Oncology (accepting applications for March 2010 and beyond)
- Psychiatry*
- Respiratory and Pulmonary Critical Care

Process
The application process takes approximately 4-6 weeks. We will contact you once a decision has been made, or to request additional information and clarification on some details of your application if needed.
If approved, an invitation letter will be issued to assist you with visa formalities. (For more information on what visa is needed to participate in our program, please refer to the FAQ section).

*Psychiatry observership: Duration of observership may be two or four weeks and will be determined by the program selection committee. Committee reviews and approves observer requests twice a year. Rotations for March - May are reviewed the first of January, September - November are reviewed the first of July. Program is unable to accommodate observers December–February and June–August
