Women’s health expert expands her role
Holly L. Thacker, MD, Director of Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Specialized Women’s Health, was already a nationally known leader in her field when she took the helm of the national Speaking of Women’s Health organization late last year.
Her longtime advocacy for women’s health aligned well with the mission of the organization, which had been presenting health conferences for women since 1996. Dr. Thacker was instrumental in bringing one of those events to Cleveland years before the board of the National Speaking of Women’s Health Foundation decided at the end of 2008 to give the organization’s assets to Cleveland Clinic.
The Speaking of Women’s Health program, with Dr. Thacker as Executive Director, is now part of Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Specialized Women’s Health within the OB/GYN & Women’s Health Institute. A combination of education and pampering, the conferences are all-day events where women can learn from each other and become inspired to take charge of their health. They include free health screenings, beauty consultations, dynamic keynote addresses and breakout sessions on important women’s health topics.
Dr. Thacker says the program fits perfectly with the ongoing goals of the Center for Specialized Women’s Health, which she launched in 2002 with support from Cleveland Clinic and a generous grant from the Avon Foundation. The center’s goals include improving the care of women through education and helping them take control of their health.
Cleveland’s eighth Speaking of Women’s Health event will be held Nov. 7, 2009. Other Speaking of Women’s Health events this month will take place in Dayton, Ohio, also on Nov. 7, and in Loma Linda, Calif., on Nov. 13. Related events throughout the year include Universal Sisters, a minority health program designed to address the unique health concerns of women of color, and Hablando de la Salud de la Mujer, a women’s health conference presented in Spanish.
