Country music fans band together against cancer
Last summer, Cleveland Clinic and Clear Channel radio station WGAR-99.5 FM teamed up with Brooks & Dunn and Brad Paisley to start the Country Fans Kickin’ Cancer movement. In the process, they created a community site on Facebook that’s still going strong.
The site features cancer facts, treatment guides, personal posts and contests. Fans – 1,390 of them and counting – log on to celebrate the heroes who fight the disease every day, whether they are patients, caregivers or community members. To date, more than 40 heroes have been nominated and 25 inspirational stories have been posted.
Brad Paisley and Brooks & Dunn donated a portion of their ticket receipts from their concerts last summer to cancer research at Taussig Cancer Institute. And individuals can make a $10 donation to the Conquering Cancer Fund by texting the word Clinic to 50555 on their cell phones. Altogether, $32,000 has been raised so far.
Next on the agenda: an online auction of autographed memorabilia from the summer concerts.
