Energetic 70-year-old changed her life and wants to help others do the same
At age 70, Murial Alexandrowski says she feels younger and more energetic than she did at 40.
Grateful for her newfound vitality, the Hillsdale County, Mich., resident has made a major gift to Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Institute. She supports initiatives begun by her physician, Michael Roizen, MD, Wellness Institute Chairman. He monitors her health closely, and she apprises him regularly of her progress. Accountability gives her the impetus she needs to maintain a healthy lifestyle, she says.
Compliments on her new, trim appearance – she lost 40 pounds in the past year – also are motivating, she says. However, her main reason for adopting a healthier lifestyle is to prepare herself for helping her husband of 43 years, Joseph, who has been diagnosed with early stage Alzheimer’s disease.
“I realized that I would have to be strong and that I would need to get younger, not older, to take care of him,” she says, adding that the couple also is raising two teenage grandchildren. “I can keep up with them now.”
Long a believer in preventive healthcare, she is now “passionately in love with the gym,” walks 11,000 steps a day and uses a treadmill at home. She eats only whole grains, fruits, vegetables and fish.
“I will never, ever go back to how I was,” she says. “I have been heavy most of my life, and now, I have given away every piece of my old clothing, which was very freeing. My confidence is a thousand times greater, and I come out of the gym saying, ‘I can do this!’ Never in a million years would I have thought I could. I want my gift to help more people change their lives as I have changed mine.”
