Research is the key to understanding health and disease. More than 80 years ago, Cleveland Clinic began operating both as a hospital and as a center of research. That alignment between research and patient care has remained a constant and powerful guide for the institution, yielding breakthroughs in every aspect of the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and other medical conditions. Lerner Research Institute is home to Cleveland Clinic’s laboratory-based, translational and clinical research where more than 1,200 scientists and support personnel pursue a wide range of biomedical questions.
Every day, Cleveland Clinic physicians, scientists, and engineers work to develop a better understanding of heart disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, cancer, HIV, diabetes, musculoskeletal disease, allergic and immunologic disease and many more areas of illness.
Laboratory-based research looks at the causes of diseases from the genetic, cellular and molecular levels, while clinical research involves informed, individual participation and is pursued with an individual's consent. Many departments conduct clinical research, which may involve studies of new medications, tests of new technologies and devices, or finding ways to access the effectiveness of new treatments and therapies. Applying the latest scientific knowledge discovered in laboratories to many fruitful collaborations leads to a rapid transition from the lab bench to a patient's bedside. These research partnerships encourage focused programs aimed at providing solutions and cures.
Your Support
With your support, the Lerner Research Institute continues its quest to understand the underlying causes of human diseases and to deliver to patients new treatments and cures. Please join us in our mission to advance medicine, empower physicians and patients to fight illness, and unlock the mysteries and cures for disease.
Friends of the Lerner Research Institute receive regular updates on research and invitations to special events, including the Friends of the LRI speakers series. If you would like to be a Friend of the LRI, contact Connie Gast at 216.444.2868.
