“Our laboratory discoveries today represent the new therapies, the new drugs and the new treatments for patients five, ten, fifteen years from now. In a sense, our mission in the Lerner Research Institute is to treat the patients of tomorrow.”
--Paul E. DiCorleto, PhD, Institute Chair, Lerner Research Institute
Laying the Groundwork
Laboratory-based research looks at the causes of diseases from the genetic, cellular and molecular levels. Scientists doing laboratory-based research try to understand how diseases develop, how to prevent those diseases and how to make people more aware of what causes the disease being studied.
At Cleveland Clinic, laboratory-based and clinical research are conducted side-by-side. As a result, discoveries translate more quickly into the clinical environment and patient benefits are achieved more rapidly.
