Residency Program Information

The Cleveland Clinic Foundation General Surgery Residency Program welcomes your interest in training here. This is a 5 year, non-pyramidal program with 4 categorical positions per year. Our commitment is to train young surgeons in a high level of clinical competence, while at the same time teaching them the importance of an up-to date knowledge of surgical science.

Training in general surgery is the essential core to most surgical practice, whether the goal is to practice general surgery or proceed to further sub-specialty training. Patient evaluation and management, critical decision making, operative skills, practice management methods, critical appraisal of the literature and the role of clinical and basic research in advancing surgical science are learned at this stage. These elements are the basis of the program with a Staff who have diverse interests and expertise.

General Surgery continues to change and evolve with increased understanding of pathophysiology, enhanced technologies, and multi-disciplinary approaches to improving treatment outcomes. Our department is at the forefront of such advances, with a commitment to educate our residents through this clinical experience in combination with a structured teaching program and conferences.

We believe our Residency Program offers outstanding training which will equip you to practice the art and science of surgery.

The Residency Program

The Department of General Surgery, in conjunction with the Departments of Colorectal Surgery and Vascular Surgery, offers a five-year accredited residency program. The program is non-pyramidal, with four residents in each year. Residents rotate through all of the surgical subs-specialties: general surgery, colorectal, vascular, thoracic, plastic surgery, urology, orthopedics, surgical intensive care, trauma, and pediatric surgery at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and MetroHealth Medical Center. In this program, residents are given graduated responsibility based on experience, always under the guidance of the senior staff.

The first two post graduate years are designed to provide an integrated background in both General Surgery and the surgical sub-specialties. Rotations modules are four weeks in length. During the first two years, residents are expected to become knowledgeable in pre-and post- operative care, management of fluid and electrolyte problems, surgical nutrition, evaluation of the critically ill patient, assessment of surgical risk, cardiopulmonary physiology, management of shock and evaluation and management of trauma. Basic physiologic principles and management of surgical problems are taught, including hernias, thyroid and parathyroid disease, breast disease, immunosuppression, gastrointestinal disease, peripheral vascular disease, colon and rectal disease, trauma, chest, and head and neck cancer. Surgical technique is taught by attending staff through direct supervision of residents in the operating room.

In the third post graduate year, increased responsibility is given in the management of patients. Residents are given the opportunity to perform more complicated gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, colorectal surgery, SICU, and learn the practice of pediatric surgery.

In the final two years of residency, the senior and chief resident is given maximum responsibility on all rotations. On all services, residents participate in the decision for diagnostic procedures and perform all operative procedures under supervision. Residents are responsible for post-operative care under the senior staff and see all patients in follow-up clinic.
