State-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities, extensive medical and surgical clinical treatment programs, and an active research focus that has yielded important basic and clinical science contributions have made the Cleveland Clinic Epilepsy Center a place of national and international prominence for the management and investigation of epilepsy. The Epilepsy Center brings together a coordinated, multidisciplinary team, offering a comprehensive range of skills and knowledge in adult and pediatric epilepsy.
Our high-volume clinical practice attracts adult and pediatric patients from all over the world, and services at our epilepsy center include an inpatient 10 bed adult epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU) as well as a separate 6 (soon to be 8) bed pediatric epilepsy monitoring unit (PMU) with an additional capacity for monitoring neonatal intensive care patients.
Our busy outpatient EEG laboratory is staffed by personnel dedicated to the care of pediatric and adult epilepsy patients. Diagnostic capabilities include high quality digital video/EEG recording for all the monitored beds, state of the art neuroimaging facilities including MRI, MRS, fMRI, PET, SPECT, magnetoencephalograph (MEG, functional late 2007) and a fully equipped laboratory to perform evoked potential studies both extra- and intra-operatively. With approximately equal activity in pediatric and adult epilepsy monitoring units, our services together provide more than 700 video EEG evaluations per year, over 100 evaluations with invasive subdural grids or depth electrodes, and more than 230 epilepsy surgeries.
Patients who are being considered for epilepsy surgery are discussed at our weekly Epilepsy Patient Management Conferences, with active multispecialty participation of 30-50 individuals. Our extensive clinical, research, and teaching activities afford adult and pediatric fellowship opportunities with remarkable depth and breadth.
We invite both adult neurology residents and pediatric neurology fellows considering clinical neurophysiology training to consider Cleveland Clinic for your further training.
