Inherited Colorectal Cancer Registries

Center for Personalized Genetic Healthcare (Genetics)

Since 1978, the Department of Gastroenterology at Cleveland Clinic has maintained a computerized registry of patients who have had polyps removed from the colon by colonoscopy.

The registry is a vast resource of information on patients with polyps and the features of polyps which are considered risk factors for the development of colorectal cancer. The registry contains data on more than 8,000 patients with colonic adenomas, which are the type of polyp that is considered pre-cancerous. It is the largest such registry in the country.

The polyp registry also has developed an automatic reminder system that notifies patients when they are due for follow-up examinations to allow for removal of new growths. Patients also are kept abreast of new prevention and treatment studies.
