A specialty is an area of dentistry that has been formally recognized by the American Dental Association as meeting the specified requirements for recognition of Dental Specialists.

Specialists have pursued further training in Fellowship and/or Residencies programs after dental school, usually between 2 to 4 years of more extensive training.
