Whether your professional plans are to provide primary care or to pursue subspecialty training, we offer a wealth of clinical experience in a collegial setting.
Training for Top-notch Pediatric Care
The priority of the staff at Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital is to provide all of our patients with the highest quality health care possible. We consider it our privilege, as well as our responsibility, to train the next generation of pediatricians to meet this high standard. Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital provides the ideal mix of patients, academic environment, and highly motivated teaching staff necessary for a compelling, challenging, and rewarding pediatric residency.
Our Hospital
Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital is a “hospital within a hospital” that utilizes all the resources available as part of one of the top four medical centers in the United States. In 2008, Cleveland Clinic’s Children’s Hospital was recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the “Best Children’s Hospitals in America” (PDF) in five of seven pediatric specialties.
The staff of our Children’s Hospital includes more than 250 physicians providing care in all pediatric medical and surgical specialties, including pediatric transplant services for children with heart, liver, kidney and lung disorders. Last year, Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital doctors accounted for 82 of the 163 pediatric physicians recognized as the “Best Doctors” in Northeast Ohio by Cleveland Magazine (March 2008).
These outside endorsements validate the world-class care that is delivered at our Children’s Hospital every day.
The majority of our residency program’s educational experiences take place at the Children’s Hospital on our Main Campus. Our pediatric and neonatal intensive care units are staffed 24 hours a day with senior in-house staff who teach and assist our residents in patient management. We have an active pediatric ground and air transport system that transports over 1,400 critically ill children a year to our hospital from all parts of Ohio as well as 13 other states. Our Children’s Hospital includes a freestanding children’s rehabilitation unit, one of only four in the United States. The rehabilitation center includes a pediatric dialysis unit and a school for autism. Multi-disciplinary programs at the center include developmental pediatrics, a feeding disorders clinic, and a chronic pain management unit. The main campus features a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Children’s Hospital that complements existing Level III nurseries located in affiliated hospitals that are part of the Cleveland Clinic Health System. The Health System is responsible for approximately 10,000 deliveries in the greater Cleveland region.
Our Training Program
Our residency program prides itself on providing training experiences that offer a balance of challenging general and subspecialty pediatric cases. Children’s Hospital is a tertiary medical center with broad experience in subspecialty care. The hospital receives many national and international referrals as well as serving the local community. Two Cleveland Clinic Health Systems community-based hospitals (Hillcrest and Fairview), as well as our outpatient pediatric practices in Cleveland Clinic’s Regional Medical Practice, provide our residents with access to large volumes of primary general pediatric care, complementing the tertiary care, subspecialty practices on Cleveland Clinic's Main Campus. We have active outpatient pediatric clinics serving suburban and inner city populations throughout Cleveland and Northeast Ohio. Residents benefit from this unique patient mix, seeing the full scope of pediatric problems. In 2008, our physicians in the Cleveland Clinic Health System saw more than 565,000 pediatric outpatient visits (primary and specialty care) and 45,000 pediatric emergency visits, and performed over 11,000 pediatric outpatient surgeries.
Our Pediatric Residency Program continues to expand, with more than 40 full-time pediatric residents in all three years of training. In addition to our categorical pediatric residency program, we offer positions in our five-year combined pediatrics/ pediatric neurology program, and consider interested applicants for one year of preliminary pediatric transitional training in pediatric dermatology, radiology, and other advanced specialties offered at Cleveland Clinic. The Children’s Hospital also offers advanced fellowship training in neonatology, allergy/immunology, pediatric infectious diseases, pediatric gastroenterology, pediatric neurology, pediatric endocrinology, pediatric hematology/oncology, and pediatric psychology.
Our residents are actively engaged in education of residents in our program, as well as medical students from Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and the Case Western Reserve University Medical School. Residents teach and supervise students on third-year core pediatric rotations, as well as students from other medical schools on fourth-year electives and acting internships. In conferences and annual retreats, our residents receive training on teaching and giving feedback. Each year, we recognize our outstanding teaching residents at our graduation and recognition ceremony.
Resident research experience is an important part of our training program, and resident involvement in research is encouraged and supported. Residents are provided basic training in biostatistics as well as a detailed curriculum in the critical analysis of medical literature (including research methodology and biostatistics). Residents with active research interest are allotted up to three modules of dedicated time for research. Our residents are encouraged to present their completed projects at national meetings. Residents and fellows present their research projects each year at our Annual Pediatric Research Day, with cash prizes awarded for the best projects. This training and experience in research helps our graduates obtain fellowships in many of the most highly sought programs.
Our program features an excellent balance between general pediatrics and subspecialty pediatric care, with supervising staff physicians recognized for their outstanding teaching and clinical care. What differentiates our program from others is a strong outpatient experience in both general and subspecialty pediatrics, with one-on-one staff teaching the rule rather than the exception. We invite you to compare our program to others, and encourage you to visit us and do an elective here so you can see the advantages of our system firsthand.
We look forward to meeting you!
