How You Can Help

Programs such as ours need the help of generous donors to accomplish our mission of giving every child with cancer, his or her parents, and brothers and sisters, everything they need to get through. Comprehensive program components like research, art therapy, school re-entry programs, family information resources, teenager support groups, to name a few, require support that does not come from insurance companies.

Support for the children and young adult cancer program is a lovely way to honor a loved one in your life. If you would like to support a particular component of the program, we would be most appreciative. You may contact Mark Flash at 216.444.9754, or contact Mark at flashm@ccf.org.

Thirteen-year-old Gina Munafo was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital. As Gina’s mom, Marisa Munafo, recalls, “We were devastated, but with the love and support of family and friends we were able to conquer this amazing journey.” Since September 2005, Gina has been cancer-free.

We cannot say enough about the care we received at Cleveland Clinic,” explained Mrs. Munafo. “The physicians and nurses were phenomenal. We feel compelled to give back to the Clinic after giving us our daughter’s health back.”

As Gina underwent chemotherapy and radiation therapy, the computer in her room was a lifeline to her friends, school, and family. She used the laptop for sending email and chatting with her friends to focus on other things besides her illness. It gave her a sense of normalcy even though she wasn’t in school or with her friends.

The laptop, Gina said, “kept my mind off what was going on in my body.” When Gina’s birthday rolled around, she didn’t want any presents and instead requested that friends and family help other children with cancer at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital by raising money for laptops. Since then, Gina (pictured at right with Dr. Hilden and Tom Richards, our child life specialist) has been able to donate six laptops for the children, adolescents, and young adults that come to the department of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.
