Autism Workshops

The Pieces of Autism

Description: This workshop will provide parents and professionals an overview of the etiology, symptoms and treatments for autism spectrum disorder. It is designed as an introductory workshop for those new to working with children with autism. Participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Introduction to Autism for Grandparents

Date: Thursday, February 5, 2015; Thursday, May 7, 2015; and Thursday, September 24, 2015
Time: 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Location: Cleveland Clinic Children’s Center for Autism (located on the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital for Rehabilitation campus)
Cost: Free
Description: This two-hour conversation for grandparents or caregivers of a child with autism will include a brief overview of autism spectrum disorders and Applied Behavior Analysis. Tips will be given on how to interact with a child with autism and ways in which you can help that child deal with the challenges he or she faces daily, your own fears and anxieties, and celebrating successes. Ways in which you can discuss autism with other family members will also be covered.

Foundations of Applied Behavior Analysis

Date: Thursday, August 13 – Friday, August 14, 2015
Time: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Location: Cleveland Clinic Children’s Center for Autism (located on the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital for Rehabilitation campus)
Cost: $300
Description: This workshop provides an overview of Applied Behavior Analysis to those who have direct contact with a child with autism. Participants will learn about symptoms and characteristic of autism, teaching principles of ABA, and troubleshooting ABA programming. A basic overview of the functions of behavior and behavior management tips will also be covered. Participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Advances Concepts in Applied Behavior Analysis

Description: This workshop is appropriate for professionals or those who have completed the Basic Foundations workshop. Designed to further knowledge of behavioral concepts and techniques, participants will learn about the functional assessment of behavior process, antecedent interventions, replacement behaviors, consequence interventions, data collection procedures and analysis, and ethical considerations. Participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Paraprofessionals Workshop on Behavioral Techniques

Description: This workshop will provide paraprofessionals working with learners with autism skills and techniques for successful behavior management and instruction. Participants will learn how to facilitate social interactions, communication, class participation, independence and activities of daily living using Applied Behavior Analysis strategies. ABA 1 Series($150 for series commitment)

Reinforcement

Date: Friday, January 23, 2015

Description: The first workshop in the ABA 1 series introduces the concepts of reinforcement. Reinforcement is what is used to strengthen adaptive behavior and increase the likelihood those behaviors will occur in the future. It is a critical piece in behavioral treatment of autism spectrum disorders. Participants will learn about positive and negative reinforcement, reinforcer effectiveness and the use of reinforcement inventories. Participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Prompting

Date: Thursday, February 5, 2015
Time: 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Location: Independence Family Health Center

Description: The second workshop in the ABA 1 series introduces the concept of prompting. Prompting is an antecedent strategy used in behavioral treatment of autism spectrum disorders to teach skills and adaptive behaviors. Participants will learn about the various types of prompts, the prompting hierarchy and prompting and fading procedures. Participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Discrete Trial Teaching

Date: Friday, February 20, 2015
Time: 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. 
Location: Independence Family Health Center
Cost: $50
Description: The third workshop in the ABA 1 series introduces Discrete Trial Teaching, commonly known as DTT. Discrete Trial Teaching is an instructional procedure that breaks skills down into small parts and systematically teaches each step using prompting and reinforcement. Participants will learn about the components of a discrete trial, task analyses and practice the procedure through role-play. Participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Data Collection

Date: Thursday, March 5, 2015
Time: 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Description: The last workshop in the ABA 1 series introduces data collection. Data collection is a critical piece of behavioral treatment of autism spectrum disorders; it is collected and analyzed on regular basis to inform treatment decisions. Participants will learn about data collection methodologies and analysis utilized in ABA programming. Participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Antecedent Strategies for Challenging Behavior: The Proactive Approach

Date: Friday, March 20, 2015

Description: The first workshop in the ABA 2 series provides an introduction to antecedent strategies for challenging behavior. Antecedent strategies are proactive procedures that consist of environmental manipulations designed to reduce challenging behavior and increase replacement or adaptive behaviors. Participants will learn about general antecedent strategies that can be implemented prior to a functional behavior assessment. Participants will receive a certificate of completion.

Behavioral Functions and Assessment

Date: Friday, March 27, 2015

Description: In the second workshop in the ABA 2 series, participants will learn about functions that maintain challenging or maladaptive behaviors and go into further discussion on specific antecedent strategies based upon behavioral function. Behavioral assessments for determining function and developing a behavior intervention plan will be covered. Ethical considerations in the functional analysis process will be addressed.

Organizational Skills for Learners with HFA

Classroom Behavior Management

Description: The first workshop in the series will provide educators an overview of effective classroom behavior management strategies to support learners with challenging behavior.  Participants will learn about visual supports, token economies, level systems, and environmental and curricular modifications.

Antecedent Strategies: Being Proactive

Time: 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Location: Independence Family Health Center
Cost: $50
Description: The second workshop introduces educators to specific antecedent strategies that can be implemented in educational settings to provide additional support to children with challenging behavior. Participants will learn about the High-P procedure, non-contingent reinforcement, the Premack Principle and other behavioral antecedent strategies.

Executive Functioning Challenges in School

Date: Thursday, October 29, 2015
Time: 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.
Location: Independence Family Health Center
Cost: $50
Description: The last workshop introduces educators to specific challenges learners with executive functioning difficulties face in academic settings. Participants will learn about the use of schedule systems, organizational strategies and other tools to facilitate success.

  • Please register as early as possible. Seating is limited and space cannot be reserved without payment or purchase order.
  • Parking at the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Center for Autism and Independence Family Health Center is free and located on-site.
    Please arrive at least 10 minutes prior to the start of the workshops in order to be signed in at the front desk.
