Skull Base Tumors

There are a wide variety of tumors affecting the base of the skull, including acoustic neuromas and other schwannomas, pituitary tumors, meningiomas, metastases, chordomas and so on. Gamma Knife Radiosurgery offers an attractive alternative or adjunct to conventional surgery for many of these tumors, particularly when weighing risk vs. benefit.

Surgery for skull base tumors is often associated with significant post-operative complications and extended recovery due to the complexity of these procedures. Even with definitive surgery, recurrence of skull base tumors is not uncommon. Gamma Knife radiosurgery may minimize these risks with tumor control often comparable to or better than aggressive surgery. A combination of skull base surgery with Gamma Knife radiosurgery may optimize the outcome for skull base tumor patients with skull base tumors in certain cases.
