Responsibilities & Services

The personnel of the GenA CE Section support the department by ensuring that equipment is available and in working order and that supplies are adequately stocked. The engineering group focuses on equipment systems, providing equipment evaluations, preventive maintenance, testing and repair.

The Clinical Engineering Section consists of one clinical engineer, (section head), two instrumentation engineers, two specialty equipment technicians, four special equipment technicians, eight anesthesia equipment specialist IIs and one anesthesia equipment specialist I. The anesthesia equipment specialist group focuses on in-room support and in-case assistance. Support is available for all scheduled OR days and on-call for all other times. Equipment Specialists are available as in room support, stocking, room turnover assistance, and Monday through Friday until 10:00 p.m. Saturday coverage is also available to support scheduled and emergency cases.

The Computer Tomography Angiography (CTA) Clinical Engineering Section provides support to the cardiac and thoracic surgery operating rooms, cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVICU), the pediatric and adult cath labs, the Center for Anesthesia Research and to the clinical staff. The seven equipment specialists stock, clean, setup, retrieve, etc. in order to maintain the 15 operating rooms, the cath lab area, specialty carts and supplies areas and cover from Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. - 11 p.m. The three specialty equipment technicians provide clinical and technical support as well as participate in special projects.

Both the GenA and CTA Clinical Engineering Sections share all equipment-related service data with Cleveland Clinic's Clinical Engineering Department, which maintains all other corporate medical instrumentation.

Members of both clinical engineering areas participate on many departmental, divisional and institutional committees. Educational responsibilities continue with the ongoing in-services provided to the residents and individual training provided to secretarial and administrative personnel.

Specialty services provided by both sections include clinical trials of both medical instrumentation and disposable and reusable supplies. Both areas specify, design and construct specialized medical instrumentation. Both sections maintain and operate special data gathering and measuring instrumentation systems.
