The Department of Outcomes Research is the clinical research branch of the Anesthesiology Institute at Cleveland Clinic. It is also the administrative center and largest site for the international Outcomes Research Consortium. The Consortium has published about 700 full research papers, with about 200 each being in Anesthesiology, and Anesthesia & Analgesia. Six papers were published in New England Journal of Medicine. Typically, the Consortium coordinates about 100 simultaneous studies, with about half at Cleveland Clinic.

The Department of Outcomes Research was founded by Dr. Daniel I. Sessler in 2005 and now has more than 45 permanent members, including 23 attending physicians, 18 research fellows, and 5 statisticians. It is the largest single-center clinical research group in the field of anesthesiology, just as the Outcomes Research Consortium is the world’s largest anesthesia-focused multi-center clinical research organization.
The Department supports every aspect of clinical research, including sample-size estimates, trial coordination, data handling, statistical analysis, and regulatory functions. Most importantly, it provides academic collaboration and assistance with study design and execution for investigator-initiated research. As part of Cleveland Clinic, the Department is non-profit with the mission of “Providing the evidence for evidence-based medicine.”
