MD Project

The MD Project is designed to increase representation of African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American and Pacific Islander physicians, research scientists, physician investigators and physician leaders.


Aspiring Physicians & Research Scientists Conference

A College Component of the MD Project

As an initiative of the Office of Diversity, the MD Project: Aspiring Physicians & Research Scientists Conference is a two and a half day enhancement program that focuses on science innovation and world-class care. Our target audience includes underrepresented minority science, math and pre-med college students. It is designed to increase representation of African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American and Pacific Islander physicians, research scientists, physician investigators and physician leaders.

The conference agenda includes presentations by Cleveland Clinic physicians and scientists as well as student research projects. The application process is competitive and the conference is limited to 30 students. It is held on Cleveland Clinic’s Main Campus in Cleveland, Ohio.

Call for Applications and Abstracts

2010 Conference Application

Cleveland Clinic is pleased to announce its 2010 conference for Aspiring Physicians and Research Scientists to be held March 24-26 on Cleveland Clinic’s Main Campus.

We invite college students majoring in science, math or pre-med to apply and for those involved in research to submit abstracts for the Poster Awards Competition.

The First Place Winner will be awarded $1000.00
Second Place, $500.00
Third Place, $250.00

The awards will be presented in scholarship dollars.

Student Guidelines for the APRSC 2010 Conference

2010 Conference Application

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Science, math, or pre-med major in good standing
  • Complete an online application
  • Cumulative transcript (unofficial accepted)
  • Reference letters: (1) faculty advisor and (1) faculty member or department chair
  • <300 word essay entitled, "Why I Aspire to a Career as a Physician or Research Scientist"
  • Title of abstract research project (Optional)
Application Deadline: December 31, 2009

Applicants will be notified of acceptance via e-mail after the abstract submission date expires.

Abstracts

2010 Conference Application

Students who wish to compete in the Poster Research Competition for scholarship dollars need to submit an abstract (brief summary of scientific work) of no more than 300 words, via email to diversity@ccf.org by January 15, 2010. The abstract should contain the following:

  • Student’s name, college/university, email address
  • Title of research project
  • Name(s) and title(s) of co-author(s); acknowledgements; references and appendices, if applicable
  • Subject area: (biology, chemistry, physics, behavioral science, math, statistics, etc.)
  • Fundamental research questions addressed in paper
  • Evidence and methodological approaches to be used and arguments to be made during presentation
  • Conclusion
Abstract Submission Deadline: January 15, 2010

If the review committee selects your work to be in the competition, you will be notified and will be required to bring a poster (landscape, 4 FT high x 6 FT wide) to the conference for presentation. You should also bring five copies of any accompanying handouts you want the judges to consider. The research may be previously submitted in other competitions; may have one or more authors and may be research conducted prior to the current school term.

Accommodations

Meals and transportation between Cleveland Clinic Main Campus and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport are included as a part of acceptance to the conference. For out-of-town travelers only: if your situation places you in need of financial support with your travel arrangements, please indicate such on the online application. (Limited hotel and travel scholarships are available for students who qualify on a first-come first-served basis.)
