A High School Component of the MD Project
Saturday Academy, a collaborative initiative between the Office of Diversity and Health Legacy of Cleveland, supports 30 underrepresented minority high school students in the development of critical skills necessary for a career in health care as a physician, research scientist, physician investigator or physician leader.
Talented African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American and Pacific Islander high school students who demonstrate aptitude for science and math, as well as emotional factors that would support successful matriculation through medical school, higher education or beyond, are encouraged to apply.
Eligibility Criteria for Application to the 2010 Charles R. Drew Saturday Academy:
- Underrepresented minority in medicine (URMM)—African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American or Pacific Islander
- 10th through 12th grade high school student enrolled at a Northeast Ohio high school and in good standing
- 3.5 or better GPA
- Official grade transcript
- Aptitude for science and math proficiency as demonstrated by the grade transcript
- Parent must commit to supporting student attendance at each session
- 500-word essay (required content outlined in application packet)
- Three reference letters: (1) parent, (1) guidance counselor and (1) teacher (math or science) or principal
Application Deadline was October 2, 2009
Sessions for selected applicants will begin in January, 2010. A monetary stipend will be awarded upon successful completion of the program.
