Cleveland Clinic Project Shows Parking Facilities Can Be Green, Too

Cleveland Clinic has made implementing sustainable design principles in all of its buildings and open space areas a key priority area for new and future projects on its campuses. The Clinic even incorporated many "green" elements to the development of a new 158-car parking facility on E. 105th Street and Carnegie Avenue to reduce the amount and impact of stormwater runoff. The Clinic and its partners on the project are hopeful that their efforts will spark a new era of parking facilities within the region that can be both functional and aesthetically appealing while serving as a solution to some of the stormwater management issues challenging cities everywhere.

Both the employees and patients that utilize this parking facility are responding positively to the new lot. The design enhances the streetscape in this area while providing a lush, vegetative character that provides a sense of relief to pedestrians and users alike among the harsh climate of pavement and hard surfaces. The site will establish a natural and healthy environment for employees and patients through the attractive landscape plantings and the other design amenities. The new parking facility develops the site in a sustainable manner, while restoring and retaining the natural systems through a design that is conscientious of natural features.
