Cleveland Clinic Performs Single-Port Prostate Surgery
Jihad Kaouk, MD, a surgeon in the Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute, is offering patients a new option for prostate surgery called single-port prostatectomy. In performing single-port prostatectomy, the surgeon removes all or part of the prostate gland through a small incision in the navel – resulting in minimal scarring.
Surgeons are even beginning to use robots to perform single-port laparoscopic procedures, including single-port prostatectomy. In the more than 100 single-port laparoscopic operations performed so far, a robotic surgical system allowed surgeons to perform surgery through a small umbilical incision with greater precision.
While additional studies are needed, robotic single-port surgery has great potential.
One of Dr. Kaouk's prostatectomy procedures was featured on a recent episode of Good Morning America on ABC. Read more online in the ABC article, "Robotic Surgery Offers Precise Handling, Quicker Procedures" or watch the video.
