Cleveland Clinic Earns Top Recognition For Improvements in Quality

University HealthSystem Consortium Names Cleveland Clinic a 2012 Rising Star

University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC), an alliance of nonprofit U.S. medical centers, announced its 2012 award recipients today, naming Cleveland Clinic as one of four “Rising Stars” for significant improvements in patient safety, mortality, clinical effectiveness and equity of care.

Cleveland Clinic jumped more than 20 positions in quality ranking from 2011 to the 20th percentile during UHC’s annual Quality and Accountability Study. 

“This award reflects the heightened awareness and focus we’ve put on positively impacting quality of care across our health system in measurable, sustainable and innovative ways,” said Shannon Phillips, MD, Quality and Patient Safety Officer at Cleveland Clinic. “This was an institution-wide collaboration and we relied heavily on the dedication of our caregivers across many disciplines at every level.”

To be eligible for the UHC Rising Star Award, an organization must improve by 20 positions and enter the top 20 of participating member organizations. Although UHC performs this assessment annually, the award, which originated in 2007, is only given when a member meets eligibility requirements. 

“UHC congratulates these hospitals for successfully focusing on health care quality and accountability improvement,” said Irene M. Thompson, UHC President and Chief Executive Officer. “This Rising Star achievement is especially notable because other academic medical centers are also working in earnest to improve patient safety and quality, and thus it has become quite difficult to stand out among more than 100 peer organizations.”

The consortium’s Quality and Accountability Study was designed to help members identify structures and practices that are associated with high performance in quality and safety. Cleveland Clinic publishes Quality Performance Reports as well as annual Outcomes Books for 14 institutes.
