Cleveland Clinic to Station Helicopter at New Twinsburg Family Health & Surgery Center

Helicopter at Medina Hospital will be relocated to newly opened Twinsburg facility in the Fall

August 10, 2011

Cleveland Clinic announced today that it will station a medical helicopter at its new Twinsburg Family Health & Surgery Center in the fall, relocating the helicopter currently stationed at Medina Hospital.
In collaboration with the City of Medina and the City of Twinsburg, Cleveland Clinic concluded that the new Twinsburg facility was the best location for a helicopter to maintain service for Medina County and to serve more patients throughout Northeast Ohio.

“The opening of the Twinsburg facility on July 25 presented an opportunity for us to station a helicopter at its helipad and serve the most patients in the area, while still serving Medina County residents,” said Rob Stall, Chief of Operations for Cleveland Clinic’s Regional Hospitals and immediate past president of Medina Hospital. “Our mission is to save lives and do what is in the best interest of those in need of our care. We continue that mission today and will continue to care for the critical needs of our Medina County residents while also bringing the highest level of care to more people in Northeast Ohio.”

A group of Medina residents and officials asked Cleveland Clinic to relocate the helicopter that has been stationed at Medina Hospital since October 2010. The helicopter has averaged 1.5 to 2 flights a day – the majority of patients on those flights came from surrounding counties outside of Medina County.
Cleveland Clinic made a commitment to the Medina community to re-evaluate available options, and examined several, including the Medina Municipal Airport. The decision to relocate the helicopter was made following several meetings with Medina officials and neighbors surrounding the hospital.
Medina Mayor Dennis Hanwell said he and city council appreciate Cleveland Clinic's work and flexibility on this project.

"Cleveland Clinic was very willing to work with the city to find a viable solution," said Hanwell. "Medina residents will continue to have access to world-class healthcare without some of the negative aspects of being a hub. The safety and medical needs of residents will not be compromised with this change. When you balance all of the interests, this is the best solution."

The Twinsburg Family Health & Surgery Center includes a 24-hour emergency department with a helipad. The center features four operating rooms, two procedure rooms and two endoscopy suites. In addition to primary care, services range from allergy to vascular surgery.

“Cleveland Clinic is committed to working closely with local leaders to provide medical care that best meets the healthcare needs of our patients,” said Richard Kratche, MD, Medical Director of the Twinsburg Family Health & Surgery Center.

Cleveland Clinic’s medical helicopter provides life-saving care to the most critically ill patients. The helicopter is staffed by two pilots, a critical care nurse and an acute care nurse practitioner. It dramatically reduces the time to the heart catheterization lab and can bring stroke care right to the patient.
