Senior Leadership Appointed To Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi

June 20, 2011

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (CCAD) and Mubadala Healthcare have appointed new executives to the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi hospital leadership team to advance the progress of this critical healthcare resource in the Middle East.

World-renowned Cleveland Clinic heart surgeon Tomislav Mihaljevic, MD, was named Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Heart and Vascular Institute. Iva Fattorini, MD, MSc., also from Cleveland Clinic, will become the Chair of the Arts & Medicine Institute. Finally, Calum Laurie, recruited from Australia, will be the new Chief Financial Officer.

In his dual role, Dr. Mihaljevic will serve as chief administrative officer of the medical staff at CCAD and oversee the heart specialists that will comprise the Heart and Vascular Institute. Dr. Mihaljevic joined the staff of Cleveland Clinic’s Heart and Vascular Institute in 2004, performing over 2,500 surgeries and specializing in complex mitral and aortic valve repair/replacement, minimally invasive surgery, and robotic assisted cardiac surgery. He also serves as a Professor of Surgery at Cleveland Clinic’s Lerner College of Medicine.

Dr. Mihaljevic will be taking over for Robert Lorenz, MD, who has fulfilled his three-year commitment to CCAD and will be returning to Cleveland Clinic to continue his clinical practice, while also taking on the role of Medical Director of Payment Reform, Risk and Contracting within Medical Operations.

As Chair of Arts & Medicine, Dr. Fattorini will expand the work of the Arts & Medicine Institute to Abu Dhabi and the international arena, while continuing to build programs throughout Cleveland Clinic’s enterprise. The Arts & Medicine Institute, established in 2008, integrates visual, performing, and therapeutic arts into the healthcare environment. Dr. Fattorini joined Cleveland Clinic in 2004 as Director of International eHealth and has led Cleveland Clinic initiatives related to international patients, wellness programs, and arts and cultural activities.

Before taking over as CCAD’s Chief Financial Officer, Laurie served as CFO of St. Vincent’s & Mater Health Sydney, an Australian not-for-profit healthcare network with more than 6,500 employees. In a variety of business settings, Laurie has led organizations as CFO for over 20 years, 12 of those years in hospitals and the healthcare industry.

“We are extremely pleased to have physician leaders and executives of this caliber who will generate excitement and continue to drive progress with Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi,” said Marc Harrison, MD, Chief Executive Officer of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. “This announcement is a testament to our commitment to this important project, which will greatly enhance the quality of care provided to the Middle Eastern region.”

Suhail Mahmood Al Ansari, Executive Director of Mubadala Healthcare, said, “These highly talented and experienced professionals will be a tremendous addition to the growing Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi team. I am delighted to welcome them onboard as we move ever closer to opening day and our goal of bringing the very highest international standards of patient care to the people of Abu Dhabi and the region.”
